It has been suggested that this church was built as a hunting chapel, possibly by Earl Godwin (father of King Harold) who died in 1053, which perhaps explains the date sometimes given for the origin of the church. Sadly we have no evidence for this so we can only surmise with the experts that it dates back to the 11th or 12th century. Be that as it may, it has watched over a pageant of change in human experience and social development for nearly half the Christian era, as highlighted in the modern mural with which we celebrated the dawn of the new millennium. The peace to be found in this little church and the beauty of its setting have to be experienced to be understood. Do pay it a visit or join us for our regular service at 9.30 am every Sunday.

The church in the countryside, half a mile north of Finchdean, near Rowland's Castle.
